Giebelstadt, June 2008 – The new Schäfer Case Picking (SCP) by SSI Schäfer received its first award: At the end of May, the novel system-concept for fully-automatic, branch-specific order compilation in warehousing and distribution logistics received the renowned MM Logistik Award. "Not another excellent system for order picking, but a modular, scalable and almost endlessly expandable complete solution" was the justification for the special price from Germanys oldest industry-magazine MM Maschinenmarkt. For with the Schäfer Case Picking (SCP), the warehousing specialist of Giebelstadt, Germany, developed an innovation that includes everything from goods receiving, de-palletizing, buffering, order-picking, sequencing and customer specific palletizing to the goods issuing department, every step of the warehousing process for ambient food and temperature controlled goods.

The SCP is a modular, scalable and almost endlessly expandable system with a perform-ance of 30,000 to 300,000 cases per day. With this, the SCP guarantees an economic solution to increase performance, quality and efficiency while, at the same time, reducing the cost per case. This way, the SCP guarantees high flexibility and delivery quality even with growing market requirements. The SCP virtually redefines efficiency.

The functional principle: The manufacturer's pallets provided by goods receiving or the high bay warehouse are automatically de-palletized in layers. The feeding of the individual layers to the pick/buffer system is done via special layer-trays. Vertical buffering of goods therefore allows automatic single or multiple access with only one movement while maximizing the use of cubic space. An intelligent software ensures the stable, volume optimized compilation of pallets for each store according to product groups.

Furthermore, SSI Schäfer strikes a new path with the matrix-solution for the order-picking and buffering system of the SCP. Through this, the formation of a complete multi-level sequence with the simultaneous reduction of storage movements is already accomplished at the buffer system. Due to these type of parallelized as well as decoupled movements, the SCP offers a maximum of flexibility and performance while minimizing the space required.

Another innovation of the SCP is the collection and continuous data administration of all product-specific features carried out by the Schäfer Vision System. The seamless use of these physical product features not only serves the volume-optimized and stability-oriented calculation and compilation of store pallets but also the individual, gentle han-dling of goods.

Yet another innovative component of the SCP is the hybrid packing station. It especially distinguishes itself by the double deep placement of encased pallet lifts and the immediate local wrapping of pallets.

Apart from the pallet racks and the conveyor system, SSI Schäfer put the focus on a number of successful components for the hardware of the SCP. Brand name systems for de-palletizing, palletizing and wrapping top off the overall concept.
