Automatic storage and processing for the largest home shopping channel in Great Britain.

From its distribution centre in Knowsley, Great Britain's largest television and internet mail order house, QVC, dispatches over 12 million orders each year. The enormous stocks of more than 25,000 different articles include household goods, electrical equipment, jewellery and clothing. All these products are dispatched to the customer within 48 hours following receipt of the order.

To maintain this impressive standard of customer service, and with an eye on future growth, QVC's aim was to ramp up its warehouse capacities considerably and remove the need for external warehouses. The main focus was on restructuring the local logistics processes, which ensure availability of the products and the quality of deliveries that are processed on the same day.

To achieve this, SSI SCHAEFER and QVC worked closely together. It started with the installation of 8 metre high drive-in racking for storing 5,000 fast moving / large volume articles. This was followed by the assembly of a 35 metre high bay racking structure for the entire range of bulky goods and the merging of satellite warehouses, which in turn resulted in a cost reduction for transport and external storage.

Project objectives:

QVC's objectives were to consolidate their operational processes within one central site by

  • doubling the on-site storage capacity
  • removing the need for external warehouses
  • restructuring internal logistics processes
  • increasing product availability
  • allowing for future growth
